Musée de la Libération de Paris – Museum of the Liberation of Paris

This museum is dedicated to one of the most dramatic moments in the city’s history: the Liberation of Paris in August 1944. It opened in 2019 in a new location right by Place Denfert-Rochereau, in an old air-raid shelter that adds to the atmosphere.

The museum is free to enter and takes you through the events of World War II in Paris. Exhibits highlight the role of General Leclerc and Jean Moulin, two key figures in the French Resistance. You’ll see photographs, films, personal objects, and documents that tell the story of everyday Parisians as well as those who fought for freedom.

One of the most striking parts of the visit is the preserved underground command post, where Colonel Rol-Tanguy directed the Paris uprising. Walking through these wartime rooms helps you imagine the urgency and courage of those days.

The museum is not very large, but it is powerful and moving. It combines history, memory, and personal stories in a way that makes the past feel close. For anyone interested in World War II or the spirit of Paris, this is a remarkable place to visit – and completely free.
