Square René Viviani – A Quiet Garden with the Oldest Tree in Paris

Right across the Seine from Notre Dame lies a small park that many visitors miss: Square René Viviani. Despite its modest size, it’s a peaceful spot with beautiful views of the cathedral and the river.

The park is most famous for having the oldest known tree in Paris, a Robinia pseudoacacia (black locust) planted around 1601. Supported today by concrete beams, the tree continues to grow, making it a living witness to more than four centuries of Parisian history.

The garden itself is charming, with flowerbeds, benches, and a calm atmosphere that makes it a perfect place to rest during a walk through the busy Latin Quarter. Locals often stop here to read or simply enjoy the view of Notre Dame without the crowds.

You’ll also find remnants of medieval architecture integrated into the garden, adding another layer of history to the setting. It’s one of those small places that remind you that Paris’s treasures aren’t only grand monuments but also quiet corners filled with stories.
