Place de la Bastille – A Symbol of Revolution
Place de la Bastille is one of Paris’s most historic squares, forever linked to the French Revolution. It was here, on July 14, 1789, that the fortress-prison known as the Bastille was stormed by revolutionaries, an event that marked the beginning of modern French history.
Today, nothing remains of the fortress itself, but the square keeps its memory alive. At the center rises the July Column, built to commemorate the Revolution of 1830. Around the base, bronze lions and inscriptions tell the story of France’s struggle for liberty.
The square is also a busy crossroads of modern Paris. It is home to the Opéra Bastille, one of the city’s main opera houses, and surrounded by lively cafés and bars. Markets, concerts, and demonstrations often take place here, continuing its tradition as a gathering place for the people.
Walking across Place de la Bastille is to step into a place where history and daily life meet. It remains one of the city’s key landmarks for anyone interested in the story of Paris.
