Moulin Rouge – The Red Windmill of Montmartre

The Moulin Rouge is one of the most famous cabarets in the world, instantly recognizable by the bright red windmill on its roof. Opened in 1889, it became the birthplace of the modern can-can dance and a symbol of Parisian nightlife.

While the shows inside are ticketed and often expensive, the exterior of the Moulin Rouge is free to see and photograph. The glowing red façade and neon lights make it especially striking at night, when the whole building comes alive with color.

The cabaret has been immortalized in countless paintings, posters, and films. Artists like Toulouse-Lautrec captured its dancers, and the 2001 film Moulin Rouge! brought its story to a new generation. Standing outside, you can feel part of that long history of music, dance, and spectacle.

The surrounding Pigalle district adds to the atmosphere – lively, sometimes a little wild, but unmistakably Paris. For many visitors, stopping by the Moulin Rouge to take a photo under the famous windmill is a must-do experience.
