Maison de Victor Hugo – The Writer’s Home on Place des Vosges
On the elegant Place des Vosges, one of Paris’s most beautiful squares, you’ll find the former home of Victor Hugo. The author of Les Misérables and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame lived here for 16 years, and the apartment has been turned into a museum dedicated to his life and work.
The permanent collection is free, and it takes you through the rooms where Hugo lived and wrote. Each room reflects a different part of his life, from his early career to his years in exile. You’ll see original manuscripts, portraits, and personal objects that make the story of this famous writer more tangible.
The museum is not large, but it has a strong atmosphere. Walking through Hugo’s study or dining room feels like stepping into the 19th century. There are also displays of his drawings and designs, which show another side of his creativity.
One of the highlights is the view from the windows overlooking Place des Vosges – a reminder of the elegant surroundings Hugo enjoyed during his time here. For literature lovers, it’s an inspiring and intimate way to connect with one of France’s greatest writers.
