La Madeleine Church – A Temple-Like Landmark

La Madeleine is one of Paris’s most distinctive churches because it doesn’t look like a typical church at all. Built in the 19th century in the style of a Roman temple, its massive Corinthian columns make it a striking presence in the 8th arrondissement.

Entry is free, and once inside you’ll find a richly decorated interior with marble, gilding, and paintings. The atmosphere is solemn yet elegant, reflecting both classical inspiration and Catholic tradition.

The church is dedicated to Mary Magdalene, and its history is unusual: it was originally planned as a temple to the glory of Napoleon’s army before being converted into a church. This layered history adds to its fascination.

La Madeleine is also known for its music. The church hosts many concerts, taking advantage of its acoustics and large organ. These events are sometimes ticketed, but simply stepping inside to admire the building costs nothing.

Its location makes it easy to combine with a visit to Place de la Concorde. Whether you’re drawn by its architecture, history, or atmosphere, La Madeleine is one of the most memorable free churches in Paris.
