Archives Nationales – France’s History in Documents
The Archives Nationales are housed in the beautiful Hôtel de Soubise, a grand mansion in the Marais district. While the institution holds millions of important documents, visitors can freely explore the historic building and its permanent displays. Admission is always free.
Walking through the ornate rooms, you’ll see changing exhibits that bring France’s political and social history to life. The museum presents a variety of treasures: medieval charters, royal decrees, revolutionary pamphlets, and even records from everyday life.
The building itself is worth the visit. Its baroque interiors, painted ceilings, and grand staircases reflect the wealth and prestige of 18th-century Paris. Outside, the quiet gardens offer a pleasant pause in the middle of the Marais.
Even if you’re not a history specialist, the Archives give a sense of the depth and richness of French heritage. It’s a place where the nation’s memory is preserved, and at the same time, it’s open to anyone who wants to wander in and discover a slice of history.
